Community Engagement

About This Workgroup

  • The Community Engagement Workgroup (CEW) – working subcommittee of the Obesity Task Force
  • Active from January 2012 to October 2012
  • Final report with recommendations to the County Council was issued in October 2012.
  • After an interim report was issued to County Council in May of 2012, the Access to Healthy Food Workgroup was merged with the Community Engagement Workgroup, since many of their next steps were interlinked.

Chairperson: Kathy Kraft, Upper Chesapeake Health, Department of Community Health Improvement

Workgroup Goals:

  • Enhance awareness of health in the community
  • Identify key stakeholders (parents, schools, businesses, childcare centers, etc.)
  • Explore best practices and what other communities are doing
  • Identify key strategies and recommendations
  • Develop action plans

To date, many of the CEW recommendations in the Obesity Task Force Final Report are being carried out by members of Healthy Harford coalition, some with funding from the Harford County Health Department Community Transformation Grant. See 2.22.13 OTF CEW update for details.

  • Supporting School Wellness
  • Creating and Employing a Unified Message of Healthy Eating and Active Living
  • Establishing Healthy Designation Programs: Healthy Restaurants, Healthy Schools, Healthy Workplaces
  • Sustaining Obesity Task Force Initiatives by Establishing a Wellness Commission
