HEALTHY HARFORD - WAY TO WELLNESS

Way to Wellness Week 2009 was a tremendous success! During the week of 9/26-10/3, Healthy Harford partnered with many local businesses and organizations in Harford County to spread the word about the importance of good nutrition and physical activity. Beginning with a proclamation from County Executive David Craig and Harford County Council, we distributed and collected over 3,000 health surveys that will be used to create a Plan to make Harford County a healthier place to live. We distributed lots of information and many of our local health clubs and businesses offered special events to promote the importance of good health. Just a sampling of activities:
- Surveys, free t-shirts and Health Guides were distributed through all of the Harford County Public Library branches, the Harford County Health Department, the Arena Club, the Y of Central Maryland and Quest Fitness Center. They were also offered at special events at Harford Community College, Harford County Government, Upper Chesapeake Health, the Ma & Pa Trail and the Havre de Grace Promenade.
- Many of the local health clubs including the Arena Club, Body Styles by Mel, the Y of Central Maryland, Quest, and Curves offered free and low cost classes, special classes, day passes, and other services to the community.
- Harford County Government employees were treated to a week long series of events including “wear your sneakers to work day” and a well-received Wellness Fair at the McFaul Center.
- Harford Community College launched a “Marathon in a Month” program – all of those who logged 26 miles in a month received a free sling bag. The Globe Café also offered lunch specials.
- Upper Chesapeake Health structured 1-mile walks 3 times/day and offered healthy cooking demonstrations for their team members.
- The Harford County Health Department embraced the week by allowing employees to wear their sneakers to work and offered exercise classes that included jogging, hiking, strength training, stretching, and walking.
