INTRODUCTION

65% of all deaths in adults are caused by heart disease, cancer or stroke, all of which are preventable.  Many of the behaviors that cause these diseases begin at a young age.  As a teen you are in a great place in your life to start making healthy choices each day to not only preserve the health you have, but to reduce your chances of developing chronic health problems such as heart disease, diabetes or high cholesterol later in life.

What can I do now to keep myself healthy?

There are a lot of things you can do now to keep yourself healthy and safe, here are just a few of the things you can do:

  1. Avoid using any type of tobacco product. Try not to breathe second hand cigarette smoke.
  2. Get regular exercise.
  3. Eat a healthy diet.
  4. See your doctor regularly for check-ups.
  5. Always use your seat belt.
  6. Wear protective headgear, such as motorcycle or bike helmets, when participating in contact sports and bike riding.
